CHAOS IN ACCRA CENTRAL; TRADERS, PEDETRIANS COMPETE FOR SPACE

An overcrowded Accra central market

A
lthough government through  the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has tried  many  times  to get traders out the streets  of Accra,  the situation keeps on worsening.

When you pay a visit to Accra Central, you  w o u l d  b e surprised at the kind of  h u m a n t r a f f i c ’ b e c a u s e traders have virtually taken over the pedestrian walkway to display their wares forcing t h e pedestrians to also use the main road.
It is high t i m e government  looked beyond scoring political points to take drastic   measures to these hawkers of the streets  by   providing them  with  a  market since the existing ones are already full.

  2. it is disheartening to see people go through this stress everyday all because others wants their ends met. the AMA should look beyond scoring political points and clear the streets of Accra for a Better Ghana.

  3. Short, interesting and precise piece. The "takeover" as I term to refer to the occupation of the pedestrian walk way by hawkers and petty traders alike has and is causing problems for the totality of us who tend to visit the markets regularly.
This pedestrian walkway "takeover" has made human flow/movement extremely difficult as pedestrians are now forced to walk on the roads which poses problems for both pedestrians as well as motorists. This takeover also affects vehicular movement and causes traffic.
I however disagree that the petty traders and hawkers are on the walkway because the markets are full. The markets are not full! The problem herein is that these petty traders and hawkers refuse to move to the designated market stalls mainly because they believe the location would not augur well for business. Is the location bad for business?? That is a question which the Accra Metropolitan Assembly must answer.
Is the AMA doing the needful to get them off the streets and into the markets built with the tax payers money? I strongly believe not!!!
The issue of the takeover is not something new as it has plagued our society for years however various governments politicise this issue and instead of addressing it head on, they tend to adopt a political play strategy similar to what is in the "Art of War" by Sun Tzu.
They tend to sack them from the streets after assuming power to let society know that they are law abiding and are up to the tasks they have been appointed for and quickly turn a blind eye when election approaches and the traders have moved back onto the pavements.
This blatant disregard of lawlessness must be stopped. The government must stand up and take a firm stand. Regardless of what it may cost them in the upcoming elections. There must be a stop to this lawlessness. This must stop now!!! Ghana deserves better.

  4. amazing pictures you have displayed but in my opinion, there is an urgent need for a change in local government policy that could make petty traders’ environment safer, more humane, and more rewarding.. . Good governance is the major way of tackling this problem. Provision of additional structures and even rehabilitation of the existing structures. these solutions are known to the sector responsible for clearing the street bhut Politics wont make way for them to tackle these issues. Is just disgusting.. . God have mercy!!! Where lies the future of Mother Ghana??

  5. No amount of promises from politicians will solve the problem Rather concrete action that accounts for the genuine desire to provide amenities for the hawkers will do.
